The Unpolished Bits — June Monthly Reflection
1. Opening Reflection
Well, it has been an interesting month. May’s Unpolished Bits never made it to the page because I was off walking the West Highland Way. I didn’t complete it — my ankle gave out and I ended up busing sections — but I still had the most incredible time. The scenery was breathtaking, the people I met were wonderful, and the whole experience was fantastic in its own imperfect way.
2. Junes Theme – Finding Space and Calm
June has been very much about finding mental space and calm. Before the walk, my brain simply never shut off. I was constantly stressed, constantly thinking, constantly bracing. But somewhere around mile nine on the first day, I realised my mind had finally gone quiet again. It was such a relief — like remembering what calm actually feels like.
Coming home after “failing” the West Highland Way was a bump back into reality. Work was stressful, and I found myself trying desperately to bring some of that trail‑calm back into everyday life. Thankfully, I’ve noticed I can switch my brain off again. Time in nature seems to give me access to that quiet space, even when everything else feels loud.
3. How My Yearly Goals Are Showing Up This Month
My goals have gone a bit haywire, if I’m honest. As we head into July, I’m determined to get back on track.
My favourite yoga teacher has been away, and the ankle injury has made classes difficult. I really miss it. Yoga brings so much space and calm to my thoughts, and I’m determined to do at least four to five sessions in July.
Financially, I’ve overspent a little, but I’m still doing okay and still saving hard. Emotionally, I’ve had some lovely moments — including a weekend with a friend I hadn’t seen in ages. Those connections matter.
Waste reduction has slipped too. I need to get back on this, especially the plastic. But even with the slip‑ups, I’m still doing better than when I started this journey, and that counts.
4. What’s Helping
Honestly, even writing this helps. It keeps me accountable. We’re halfway through the year now, and although it has been challenging, I can see the progress I’ve made. The small changes, the gentle routines, the moments of calm — they’re adding up.
5. What I’m Learning
I’m learning that progress doesn’t have to be neat. It doesn’t have to be linear. It doesn’t have to look impressive from the outside. I’m learning that rest is part of the rhythm, not a break from it. And I’m learning that even when things go off‑track, I can find my way back with small, steady steps.
6. Gentle Intentions for Next Month
Focus on yoga. Keep working on reducing my waste. Spend more time in nature to access that quiet space. Bring the calm of the trail into the everyday.
