The Unpolished Bits — April Monthly Reflection

After the stress and overwhelm of March, April has been a month of deliberately creating space and calm. I’ve spent a lot of time outside, taking long walks and letting nature do what it always does for me. If you’re curious about why that helps so much, I’ve written about the benefits of time in nature here. It’s been a long road back to myself, but I’m feeling much better than I did last month.

Monthly Theme: Rest, Routines, and Boundaries
This month has centred on rest, gentle routines, and the ongoing work of holding boundaries at work. I’ve had to ask — and sometimes fight — for what I need and am entitled to. Work still isn’t meeting the obligations they should, but I’m inching forward. I’ve also leaned heavily into the “little and often” approach. Progress over perfection. Ten minutes of cleaning a day. Small resets.

How My Yearly Goals Are Showing Up
My yearly goals have shown up in small but meaningful ways. My yoga practice continues to be a non‑negotiable part of my wellbeing. It’s one of the few things that reliably brings me back into my body when my mind is running ahead.

Financially, things are moving slowly and steadily. I get frustrated at the pace. I’ve been a bit rubbish with money in the past, and that history still makes me worry about the future. But the reality is: I’m not in any major debt, and the maths says that even if I only keep doing what I’m doing now, I’ll be okay. So why the worry. Comparison. And of course, we never compare ourselves to people who are worse off. Only those who seem miles ahead. When I catch myself doing that, I realise how blessed I actually am. My waste audit went awry. Counting every item became too much, so I recycled the lot without counting it. Though bin loads it seems far less than last time.

What I’m Learning
I’m learning to be proud of how far I’ve come. The small, day‑to‑day changes I talk about here genuinely held me when things went wrong last month. They gave me a safety net I didn’t realise I’d built, and because of that, I’ve been able to move forward more easily than expected. I’m also learning that pausing is not failure. Stopping gives me energy to keep going. Rest is part of the rhythm, not a break from it.

Gentle Intentions for Next Month
Next month I’m heading off on my adventure: walking the West Highland Way. It will be a month of nature, movement, and quiet. A chance to reset in a different landscape and let the miles do their work.
